We are now staying in Sault Ste Marie, MI. We took a trip to the Pictured Rocks State Park. Note in the picture below the water coming through a hole in the rock.
We also went to Tahquamenon Falls. (Rhymes with Phenomenon). The water has tannin in it which make the water brown. The tannin comes from cedar trees. Seems strange to someone like me who has only seen clear water falls before. This is the upper falls. Next picture is the lower falls.
And this chipmunk insisted I take his picture by posing.
Today we went over the river to Sault Ste Marie, Canada. Finally saw a moose, even if it was made of wood. Lots of old houses made of brick over there. Very interesting to Jeff and I to see them.
We went up the Tower of History here on the USA side. It is 210 feet high. It has a great 360 deg. view of the whole town. It also has a great view of Mary's River and Lake Superior. So much fun to see and hear the big ships coming down the river and going through the locks. I was able to get a great picture of the town electric plant. It was built in the early 1900's. Hard to tell in this picture but it is made out of brick. A lot of the buildings and houses are made out of brick here because the wood just ends up rotting because of the weather.
This shows the ship coming into the lock from Lake Superior. It needs to go down 21 feet to go into Mary's River. You can see how high it was when it came in, the last picture shows how low it was when it when out. While this was happening another ship of the same type was in the lock on the other side. It was coming from the river and going into the lake. It came up at the same time this one went down. Pretty interesting seeing these ships going up and down in the locks.
